What materials are not accepted at the landfill?
Ohio EPA and Brown County laws prohibit the Brown County Landfill from accepting hazardous waste, including:
- Lead acid batteries
- Whole tires
- Pesticides
- Herbicides
- Medical/infectious/biohazard waste
- Appliances containing refrigerant
- Fertilizers
- Radioactive waste
- Fluorescent lamps and ballasts
Landfill Facts
Current Operations
- Rumpke has operated and managed the Brown County Landfill since 1984 and has nearly 100 employees.
- The landfill is permitted to receive up to 3,000 tons per day. On
average, the facility receives about 1,700 tons per day within an 80-mile radius.
Site Features
- The Brown County Landfill features a landfill gas recovery system, made up of about 120 gas wells installed throughout the site to collect gas and send it to the onsite energy plant. The plant has the capacity to power over 9,000 neighboring homes.
- The 11 acres of wetlands on the landfill are also home to many plant and wildlife species, such as butterflies, swamp milkweed, turtles, water-dependent insects, white-tailed deer and more.
Recent Updates
- Invested in a new wheel wash in 2021 and 2022. The site entrance was relocated to add approximately 1,750 additional feet of paved roadway to reduce debris.
- New cell lining and construction—liners are required for modern
landfill construction. - Two more capping events are planned for 2024 and 2025.
