Medora Landfill
The Medora Landfill in Jackson County, Indiana, was established in 1971. Rumpke purchased the site in 1983 and has worked to maintain it as an environmentally friendly disposal option for the Southern Indiana region.
About the Landfill
- The Medora Landfill is permitted to receive municipal solid waste and construction demolition debris. On average, the facility receives 1,500 tons of material per day, and is permitted to receive 2,000 tons of material per day.
- Currently, 174 acres at the site are permitted for waste disposal. Rumpke owns approximately 966 acres at the site.
- There is a three-acre wetland mitigation area on the property that was constructed in 2007. The area’s purpose is to preserve, enhance, restore and maintain the natural features and ecological values of the property, provide habitat for native plants and animals, improve and maintain water quality and control runoff of sediments.
- A stream mitigation area, constructed and maintained by Rumpke, stretches approximately one mile through land easements from neighboring property.
- Rumpke operates the landfill in strict compliance with all local, state and federal regulations that govern the site.
- The Medora Landfill is monitored and regularly inspected by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM), Jackson County Health Department, US Army Corps of Engineers and Rumpke.
- Each new section of the landfill is designed and constructed with a special liner system that protects that environment and human health.

- Rumpke processes recycling from residential, commercial and industrial customers.
- The 9,520-square foot recycling center features a sizeable tipping floor, an enclosed compactor and a baler for commercial cardboard.
- The facility processes approximately 8,000 tons each year.
- Some recyclables collected at the Medora Recycling Center will be transported directly to manufacturers to create new products, while Rumpke will transport remaining items to its regional recycling facility in Cincinnati for processing.

Rumpke’s Medora Recycling Facility accepts recyclables from a wide portion of southern Indiana, covering a 75-mile radius around the facility. Recyclables come from residential curbside and drop-off box programs and commercial customers.
Are the recyclables picked up or are they dropped off at the facility?
Primarily, recyclables are brought to the facility by Rumpke collection trucks that collect recycling from residential and commercial customers in the region. Area residents can also bring recyclables directly to the site, where Rumpke offers a public drop-off box.
How are recyclables processed at the facility?
The facility serves two primary functions:
1. Residential Single Stream
Rumpke offers single stream curbside collection throughout the surrounding community. Materials collected are delivered to the Medora Recycling Center and unloaded onto the tipping floor.
A conveyor line feeds the material to a manual pre-sort station, where contaminants are removed.
The single stream material is then conveyed outside the facility into an enclosed compactor. The material is then transported to Rumpke’s regional single stream Material Recovery Facility in Cincinnati for processing.
2. Commercial Cardboard
Rumpke collects loose cardboard from area businesses and industries and delivers it to the Medora Recycling Center. The cardboard is unloaded onto the tipping floor.
A conveyor line feeds the cardboard to a manual pre-sort station, where contaminants are removed.
The cardboard is then baled in a closed-door, manual tie baler. Rumpke transports baled cardboard directly to regional end-users.
