Rumpke Honored for Educational Outreach Efforts
CINCINNATI (March 7, 2011) – The Cincinnati Business Journal and the US Green Building Council recognized Rumpke for its efforts to educate the public about the importance of proper waste disposal and recycling during the publication’s annual Green Business Awards.
On March 3, Rumpke took home top honors in the category of Education/Outreach.
“At Rumpke, we are thinking of future generations, and that is why we are actively working to educate our neighbors about our business and what they can do to extend the life of landfills,” said Amanda Pratt, Director of Corporate Communications, Rumpke.
“We know that in order to be successful in keeping our neighborhoods clean and green, we need average citizens and businesses to divert recyclables from the waste stream. In 2009, Rumpke disposed of nearly 2 million tons of material in its Colerain Township landfill, while our Cincinnati recycling center only took in 102,000 tons. Our goal is work with residents and businesses to close that gap.”
To educate the masses about the environmental importance of landfills and garbage disposal, Rumpke invites the public to tour its landfills. Annually, more than 10,000 people tour Rumpke’s sites to learn more about the environmental safeguards in place, including the liner system, renewable energy collection system and monitoring stations. Additionally, many of sites host a community open house to ensure our neighbors have the opportunity to tour the site and speak directly to our team of experts.
Rumpke also offers tours of its recycling centers to educate the public about what is acceptable in the regions’ recycling program and better explain what happens to the material once it leaves the curb. However, we also understand that visiting our sites isn’t always practical so we offer presentations to school, civic and community organizations.
For individuals unable to visit its facilities or attend a presentation, check out Rumpke's YouTube channel. It offers short videos about operations as well as to other Rumpke pages and resources.
