Recycling Success at the Knox County Fair
MT. VERNON, Ohio —Aug. 13, 2012— Rumpke Recycling partnered with the Knox County Commissioner’s office to collect 1,387 pounds of recyclables at the Knox County Fair July 22-28.
Knox County’s Recycling Coordinator Linda Montgomery organized the collection and was aided by the Clinton Clover 4-H Club who collected plastic bottles, aluminum cans and cardboard boxes during the fair. The recyclables were stored in a 45 ft. trailer from Rumpke.
“When I asked Rumpke for help, they really came through for me, with a trailer on site at the Knox County Fairgrounds,” said Montgomery. “During the past several years, an AlleyCat recycling trailer was used to store recyclables, and it always had to be swapped out before the collection ended. The usage of an AlleyCat also meant that one trailer was pulled from the drop off rotation, which placed an extra burden on the staff at the recycling center to empty trailers quicker than normally possible.”
This year, the group collected an estimated 25,000 bottles and cans, along with 220 pounds of cardboard. The recyclables were transported via Rumpke’s Mt. Vernon recycling center to Rumpke’s regional recycling facility in Columbus, Ohio, for further processing.
“Rumpke is proud to have partnered with Knox County to help recycle during the fair,” said John Cochran, Rumpke Recycling manager. “Linda Montgomery and her team did a great job of diverting material from the landfill.”
“It wouldn’t be possible to do this without the great recycling effort displayed by the citizens of Knox County,” added Montgomery.
Since purchasing the Knox County Recycling Facility in May 2011, Rumpke has worked to boost recycling in the area through community outreach, event participation, sponsorships and partnerships. Located on Columbus Road, the site serves as a drop-off location for recyclables, along with a public recycling buy-back center where Rumpke pays cash for aluminum cans, cardboard and scrap metal. It is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.
