Newport Moves to Weekly Trash Collection Curbside Recycling for All
Newport, Kentucky – June 21, 2017 – Newport is making big changes to its trash program. Beginning July 1, curbside recycling is available to all residents at no additional cost and trash moves to once weekly collection.
As part of Newport’s contract with Rumpke, all residents will receive a 65-gallon recycling cart that will be collected once per week at no additional cost. Residents can opt for a smaller 18-gallon bin by contacting Rumpke. Rumpke will deliver recycling containers June 24 and 25.
With the move to once weekly trash collection and the adoption of curbside recycling for all, most residents will have a new collection day.
Residents should watch their mailbox next week for information about their new trash and recycling collection schedule. The new schedule can also be accessed on the City’s website and online searchable map of pick up days can be viewed at https://arcg.is/8SGTj.
“It’s a big change for our residents,” said Tom Fromme, Newport City Manager. “For years, we offered twice weekly trash collection service and offered curbside recycling for an additional fee.”
Fromme said that only 400 of the City’s 6,000+ households participated in the curbside recycling program.
“Like trash, recycling collection is an essential service,” Fromme said. “It’s important that our residents make an effort to reduce the amount of trash we send to the landfill. To help encourage participation, we took away the cost barrier.”
Residents who would like to request a different size recycling container or have questions about changes to the program, can contact Rumpke.
