Madison Indiana Starts New Recycling Program
MADISON, Ind.—April 16, 2014—Beginning in May, City of Madison residents no longer need to separate items for recycling, now that the City has started a new contract with Rumpke Recycling.
Acceptable items for recycling:
• Plastic bottles and jugs
• Aluminum and metal cans
• Paper and cardboard
• Glass bottles and jars
• Cartons (e.g. milk and juice cartons)
Check complete acceptable items list.
Beginning with recycling the week of May 5, plastic bags should no longer be used for separating recycling, they should be used for shredded paper only. Under the new program, all recyclables listed below can be placed in one container. Residents can get an 18-gallon recycling bin to place their recycling in for no charge. Residents also have the option to use their own recycling container, which must be labeled as such. Labels or bins are available at City Hall or by calling 265-8304.
Please clean any food out of all bottles, jugs, and jars. Rumpke will accept nearly any paper, including junk mail, magazines, phone books and paperboard, such as cereal boxes. Plastic bags, plastic foam products, shoes, rags, clothing, and electronics will not be accepted in this program. Plastic shopping bags may be recycled at Kroger, and electronics, oils, refrigerate items, used tires, and batteries are accepted at the Southeastern Indiana Recycling District in the Jefferson Proving Ground. Pickup will remain on the same schedule as the current program, which is the first and third weeks of the month.
To help kick-off this program, the City of Madison will host two events on April 26th for residents. The first event will take place on Saturday morning, April 26th from 9am-12pm at Kroger. The second event will take place on Saturday afternoon, April 26th from 2pm-5pm at Bicentennial Park in downtown Madison. Both events will have free food, information about the new recycling program, a visit from Rumpke’s mascot “Binny” and the ability for residents to pick up their new recycling bin. City Hall will also have bins available to pick up after the kick-off event.
